So often, women feel the pressure to “do it all.” On social media, it can look like some mothers have everything under control — the perfect baby, the perfect home, the perfect balance between career and family. But the truth is, those images don’t tell the full story. They’re not the reality most of us live every day.
Being a commercial photographer and a mum feels a lot like working with light and shadow. Some days, the light pours in — projects flow, my baby is happy, and everything feels in balance. Other days, the shadows take over — deadlines clash with sleepless nights, and I feel like I’m missing the mark on both fronts.
But just like in photography, it’s the contrast between light and shadow that creates depth and meaning. Motherhood has added a new layer of richness to my work, reminding me that life isn’t about chasing perfect lighting — it’s about finding the right composition of both to tell the story.
It’s okay if the process takes longer than you expected. It’s okay if your rhythm feels different now. You can’t rush back to who you were before, because that person has already transformed.
Some days the balance feels good; other days it’s complete chaos. But I’m learning that it doesn’t have to be perfect to work. Motherhood has made me more flexible, more patient, and it’s even changed the way I see the world through my camera. It’s not easy, but it’s real — and that’s enough

What was your biggest adjustment when becoming a mum?
Adjusting to this new version of me. Before motherhood, my time was my own.
How many kids…
One — Baby Myles Ryder.

How do you manage the juggle when it comes to trying to do it all?
“Super Mum” today is glamorized, and the idea that we need to be it all and do it all is actually a false reality. You can’t have it all at once, and I think women today put so much pressure on themselves. That said, when you run your own show, it can feel almost impossible to step away.
When I love what I’m doing, it doesn’t feel like “doing it all” — it feels like being in my flow. My soul needs the excitement of new ideas and the continual spark of creativity.
I’m very grateful for what I do and the industry I’m in, as I know many women don’t have the same flexibility or luxury. But I also make sure to tap out and take time with Myles when I know I’ve reached capacity — and that’s really important.
What is the best thing about being a mum?
When you make them laugh. Coming back to those simple moments.
What is the biggest challenge you have experienced since becoming a mum (or whilst being a mum)?
The hormones. They’re not spoken about enough — and we need to change that stigma. When a woman has a baby, she goes through one of the biggest hormonal shifts of her life, yet she’s expected to take on even more emotional and physical load. There needs to be more support during this time. Not to mention the reality of postnatal depletion, and the fact that so many mothers don’t get the chance to look after themselves properly.

What surprised you the most when becoming a mum?
My ability to stay calm.
Letting go of control — something I’ve always struggled with — was a big surprise, but also a gift.
What you wish you knew before becoming a mum?
Everyone says it, but it’s true: how quickly they grow out of the newborn stage.
Also, trusting myself more — that inner knowing is stronger than you think.
Practical baby items I swear by:

Do you have any trips or tricks for the day-to-day juggle?
Every day looks different. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. If you’re tired, rest. If you’re inspired, dive into your work. Listen to your body and honor what you need. This is such a powerful time to lean into your feminine and your spiritual energy.

How do you manage your time between career, being a mum, your relationship, and yourself?
I don’t think anything ever truly “fits” neatly. For me, it’s about creating space where I can and giving myself grace where I can’t. When I’m shooting, I allow myself to be fully present in my work and reconnect with the part of me that loves my career. When I’m with my little one, I switch off from everything else and give him my full attention.
I’ve also learned not to be so hard on myself. Instead of focusing on what I didn’t get done, I celebrate what I did. Working mums ask so much of themselves every single day — and that deserves recognition.
Who is in your village — who couldn’t you live without?
My friends! They’re the family I chose. I feel so lucky to have gone through motherhood alongside five of my best friends. While physical support isn’t always possible with busy lives, the emotional support is everything. I’ve always been raw, open, and honest with my friends, and in turn, I receive the most beautiful and loving support back.
Your village should help you grow, learn, and flourish — not just hold you up.
Kind reminder…..
Even the shadows give depth — in photos, in business, and in motherhood.
