The Lembongan Traveller: Capturing the Heart of Nusa Lembongan

Built From Family, Community, and a Deep Connection to Island Life

By HTE Founder, Erin Hughes.

There are some places that stay with you long after you leave. Not because they were the most polished, the busiest, or the most talked about — but because they made you feel something.

For co-founder Tania Walker of The Lembongan Traveller, Nusa Lembongan was exactly that kind of place.

When they first visited the island in the early 2000s, it was still relatively quiet online. Booking accommodation wasn’t always simple, boat transfers could feel confusing, and travellers often had to work things out as they went.

But behind that lack of digital presence was something deeply special — crystal-clear water, warm local people, a slower pace, and a sense of community that was hard to shake.

With a background in tourism marketing, Tania began to wonder: what if there was a way to make travelling to Lembongan easier while also protecting and celebrating what made the island so special in the first place?

And so, The Lembongan Traveller began.

What started as a simple love for the island quickly became something far more meaningful — a platform built on trust, local connection, and a genuine desire to help travellers experience Lembongan properly. Not just the beaches, the boats, and the sunsets, but the people, the culture, and the everyday rhythm that gives the island its soul.

The turning point came in August 2013 after a family trip during the Australian winter. On the boat back to Bali, they realised more and more friends were falling in love with the island too. That same month, The Lembongan Traveller Instagram page was created — a small step that would eventually grow into something much bigger than they ever imagined.

Because Lembongan wasn’t just a destination anymore.

It had become part of their future.

By 2018, after years of extended stays and deepening relationships with local businesses, they made the move to the island.

Living there allowed them to build The Lembongan Traveller with a kind of insight you can’t fake. They weren’t sharing from the outside looking in. They were there — connected to the people, the pace, and the community.

And that matters.

In a world overflowing with glossy travel content and endless “must-see” lists, The Lembongan Traveller has always been guided by something quieter and more grounded: honesty. Their content isn’t about chasing trends or selling a version of the island that doesn’t exist. It’s about sharing what they genuinely know, what they’ve experienced, and what travellers can realistically expect when they arrive.

At its heart, the platform is about purposeful travel. Yes, it inspires people to visit. But more than that, it encourages them to slow down, look around, and understand the place they’re stepping into.

Lembongan tends to attract the kind of traveller who values quality of time over quantity of plans.

The ones who can happily spend the morning in the ocean, linger over lunch, have a nap, drink a coconut, and call it a perfect day.

It’s for families wanting something safe and welcoming. For women needing a reset. For people craving simplicity in a world that rarely gives us permission to slow the hell down.

Behind the scenes, The Lembongan Traveller has grown through listening, learning, and building strong relationships with local operators.

Today, more than 90% of the team are Lembongan locals — something the business is deeply proud of.

Creating meaningful employment on the island means team members can stay close to their families rather than needing to relocate to mainland Bali for work.

That community-first approach is also shaping what comes next.

Through their ongoing initiative, Love for Lembongan, the team continues to support education programs and local wellbeing across the island in partnership with Bali Children Foundation. Most recently, they carried out home visits to elderly and priority patients within Lembongan village, providing support and connection to vulnerable members of the community.

Through Love for Lembongan, they also support an EdTech program across five elementary schools on the island, providing students with tablets loaded with educational apps designed to help accelerate literacy and numeracy skills.

Because growth, for The Lembongan Traveller, has never been about becoming bigger for the sake of it.

It has to be thoughtful. Respectful. Balanced.

It has to support local people while preserving the very things that make Lembongan so special.

And perhaps that’s why the platform resonates so deeply.

It’s not just selling a holiday.

It’s sharing a way of being.

A reminder that travel can be slower. More present. More connected. That the best experiences are often the ones shaped by people, culture, and community — not just places pinned on a map.

For anyone who discovers Lembongan through The Lembongan Traveller, the hope is simple: that they see beyond the surf breaks and sunsets. That they feel the heart of the island. That they arrive with curiosity, move gently, and leave with a deeper understanding of the people who call it home.

Because if The Lembongan Traveller has done its job right, visitors won’t just see Lembongan.

They’ll feel it.
