Can you tell us a little about you and your family?
I’m 41, married, and a mum to two girls aged 8 and 10. We live in Yarraville, Melbourne. I work part-time as a primary school teacher and also as a content creator.
Adjustment to motherhood?
The biggest shift for me was how isolating it felt, and the realisation that it’s not about you anymore. Your life starts to revolve completely around your kids.
How do you manage the juggle?
You really can’t do it all. I’m lucky I only teach two days a week, and that my other work is flexible.
I outsource what I can, whether it be childcare or cleaning, and I try to get my husband involved as much as possible. We’re fortunate that his job also offers some flexibility.
The best thing about being a mum?
I created my two favourite people and best friends in the entire world.

The biggest challenge?
The isolation, and coming to terms with the fact that I didn’t (and still don’t) have a lot of support.
What surprised you the most about motherhood?
How long it took my husband to adjust and how little support he showed me at the beginning.
What do you wish you knew before becoming a mum?
That life was going to completely change. It turns your whole world upside down. It’s a tough job.
Any advice to your past self or new mums?
Don’t stay at home as long as I did. I often recommend to new mums to go back to work even if it doesn’t make financial sense as it can be so good for your mental health if you’re struggling at home.
Any tips to manage the day-to-day juggle?
Outsource where you can. Some days I barely break even after paying before and after-school care, but it’s worth it. Ask friends for help. Don’t overcommit. Kids don’t need to do loads of after-school activities, they need downtime. Let them watch iPads and TV so you can get things done.
How do you manage your time across career, parenting and everything else?
I only teach two days a week, and the other three are for me. We go on family holidays often, which gives us quality time together. Date nights don’t happen much, but I often catch up with friends. I also volunteer on a few committees, which I enjoy.

Who’s in your village?
My dad and my sister. My mum passed away a few years ago.

Why did you love this place?
It’s just so easy and my kids absolutely love it.
